In the following editions of the Narwhal I will be exploring the lore of the cult book and movie “Game of Thrones”. The vast story of Westeros’ cannot be packed in a 12 episode TVShow, therefore I will present some of the lore, or story that is not in the TVShow but is in the book, for a better and more fulfilling enjoyment of the TV series.
Journal Entry #1 - The History of Westeros.
History is usually defined as the time period of humanity after writing was invented. The history of Game of Thrones (Westeros’) dates back to 12,000 years before Aegon’s landing [BAL]; right when they invented writing and recording of history began. The First Men are the first humans to come to Westeros. When they come to Westeros they start cutting the weirwood trees of Westeros which angered the Children of the Forest, who were in Westeros before the first men. Then a war breaks loose between the first men and the children of the forest. The Children of the Forest use their magic against the First Men, however, their magic backfires and turns The Neck in to a giant marsh. 10,000 BAL the Children of the Forest and the First Men sign a peace treaty. Peace and harmony is present in Westeros until the Others come, from the land of always winter. Afraid, the First Men and the Children of the Forest team up, defeat the Others and drive them out from Westeros to “the land of always winter”. After the defeat they decide to build a barricade that separates Westeros from the “Land of always Winter”. Using the Children’s magical expertise they build “the Wall”, the wall is a colossal structure which stretches for 300miles along the northern border of Westeros and is 700ft tall; although it originally was not build that high. 6,000 years later the Andals disturb the peace and start a war with the First Men. By this time the Children of the Forest have almost died out and are withdrawn deep in the forests of Westeros. The Andals win the war and end up taking over the Southern Lands. They replace the old gods with their Seven and start cutting down the weirwood trees. The First Men are driven North and end up settling there. That is why the people of the North always say that they posses the “blood of the First Men” and they also worship the old gods, because they took up the Children of the Forest’s gods as their own. And a few thousand years later begins the story line in the books and TVShow.
