The Nightmare before Christmas (1993)
Halloween and Christmas are approaching and I believe this to be the perfect time to watch one of Tim Burton’s older works “The Nightmare before Christmas”. Don’t worry, it is not one of those extremely bad Johnny Depp movies that Tim has been writing these past 10 or so years (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland *cough*.)
“The Nightmare before Christmas” takes place in an imaginary world called Halloween Town. The citizens of this town are witches, skeletons and evil scientists as well as the infamous Boogieman who is the protagonist’s enemy. Bored by the same routine every Halloween, Jack Skellington stumbles upon Christmas Town. Inspired by the happiness there, he gets the wish to take over Christmas.
The movie stars the voices of Catherine O’Hara as Sally (the rag doll-like monster created by the town’s mad scientists), Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington, and Chris Sarandon and Ken Page as the Boogieman. These actors starred in movies like “Child’s Play”, “Home Alone”, “Charmed”, “Planet of the Apes” etc.
The good: I loved the inclusion of classic monster tales like Frankenstein’s monster, the boogieman, witches, ghosts, ghouls and vampires (don’t worry not of the sparkly kind). Maybe it was not an especially original idea but you will still love the movie. Then again, when was the last time you saw an original movie?
The bad: Although I love this movie, I hate the singing that takes place. I hate musicals. There is nothing that I hate more than musicals. The singing scenes are not really that intrusive, and unless you hate musicals the way I do, you can live through those scenes.
LOVE it/HATE it: …… Personally I loved this movie. It is one of my favorite if not THE favorite animated film of all time. Whether or not you are a fan of animated/love story fantasy movies you should go and watch this movie. You have to keep in mind however, that it is not like one of those new Tim Burton movies, this one is NOT actually awful.
