New School Year, New Skopje City Mall
School has started and we are more than full of responsibilities - which pretty much sucks. Freshmen are still getting used to the high school pace, sophomores and juniors are thinking about their performances on the PSAT, and seniors… they are just being seniors, with all their studying/partying and preparing for college.
Despite everything, there’s always the weekend to help us get our minds off the stress and relax a bit. I’m pretty sure that most people had the same idea these past few weeks and went to visit the new Skopje City Mall. In fact, its official opening is one of the biggest news of the month!
Well… What did you think about it? I personally went for the Burger King and was heart-broken when I found out it was closed (even though it’s not anymore!); but then again, I cheered myself up with a slice of pizza, some candy, and some shopping. I also heard a rumour that a Starbucks will open, even though it was a well known fact that it was never going to happen.
Still, we have Zara, Bershka, Pull&Bear, PennyBlack, Lacoste, Viktor Chevignon Carrefour and many more shops Macedonians were looking forward to seeing (given the fact that it’s the first time most of these stores are in Macedonia). Additionally, we can find the multiscreen cinema Cineplexx, a Bowling Center, and a soon-to-come Children’s center. In addition to the electronics specialist “Neptun”, which attracts both adults and adolescents, there are also many childrens’ stores where the little ones can go buy each other birthday presents.
…To end with a cherry on top, Skopje City Mall provides cafés, bars, lounges and restaurants, such as Trend, Play City Café, or Domino’s Pizza (which serves typical American pizza), Spizzicotto, Giro Mamas, and, as mentioned before - Burger King. These places are often the perfect spots where people, after a hard day of shopping, can go on a coffee-break, grab a bite, and chat with friends.
Furthermore, except for the fact that the Skopje City Mall is making the capital city “international” and what not, it is apparently having great impacts on Skopje’s economy by being the biggest shopping center in the country and (quoting Mr. Gruevski) “encouraging many companies in investing their capital in the Macedonian economy”. In my opinion, it will just be a big hit for the first few months before shops start closing; in fact, I think the prices are a bit high for Macedonian standards - but maybe I’m wrong, you decide.
In addition to all the positive sides of the mall, its location might help us NOVA students relax during the week since it takes a five-minute walk from school. From time to time, during break or free periods, going to the City Mall with a group of friends could bring some freshness to the everyday routine of spending time in the cafeteria.
Have a nice week
